The Liver: The Silent Player in More Health Issues Than You Think

June 10, 2025

In my clinic, there’s one common thread that weaves through case after case—liver involvement shows up more consistently than any other health factor.

The liver is involved in virtually every aspect of metabolism and body maintenance, performing over 500 different functions in the body. It is the largest digestive exocrine gland in the body. It’s essentially a biochemical powerhouse that handles everything from detoxification and protein synthesis to blood clotting, immune function, and energy storage.

Because it is responsible for performing so many vital functions in the body, its malfunction can lead to a wide range of problems.

These problems can look like:

  • Depression
  • Anger
  • Decrease in immune response
  • Allergies (food, respiratory, environmental)
  • Biliary stasis (slow or reduced flow of bile from the liver to the digestive tract)
  • Decrease in hepatic metabolism (a precursor to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and diabetes)
  • General fatigue/tiredness
  • Urgent diarrhea after eating
  • Bitter regurgitation
  • Pain after ingestion of fatty foods
  • Skin problems
  • Joint pain
  • Circulatory/vascular issues
  • Suboptimal hormone metabolism
  • PMS/PMDD
  • Hepatitis
  • Cirrhosis

Several interconnected factors are driving the rise in liver diseases in the United States. These include metabolic dysfunction, Western dietary patterns, sedentary lifestyles, increased alcohol consumption, and drug-induced liver injury (from pharmaceuticals and supplements).

But here’s the encouraging news: The liver is also the most responsive to treatment.

When we address liver health, patients don’t just feel better, they experience dramatic improvements in energy, digestion, psycho-emotional health, and overall vitality that ripple through every aspect of their well-being.
